Spanish IA & IB Course Syllabus 2010-2011

Teacher:  Reyna Vázquez

 

            Dear Parents,

I am very pleased to be your child's Spanish teacher this year. I look forward to a great year, full of new and exciting learning experiences.

                This outline will inform students and parents about the organization and expectations of this course. The class will consist of daily homework assignments, class work, oral participation, frequent quizzes, and exams. There will be a heavy emphasis placed on oral communication.

                6th or 7th graders in Spanish IA will cover chapters 1-6 in one academic year. 7th or 8th graders in Spanish IB will cover chapters 7-12 in one academic year. The grade of Spanish I will be the average of two years (IA&IB). The average of each year will consist of seven grades (6 six weeks period grades and the average of the midterm and final exams). The Spanish textbook used for both courses is ¡Buen Viaje! Students who successfully complete Spanish IA and IB will receive one high school credit.

 

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

1. Show respect for self, others, and property.

2. Be seated and working on warm-ups as soon as class begins.

3. Come prepared for class with materials (book, notebook, workbook, pen, paper, etc.).

4. NO food, drinks, or gum in class

5. Remain seated in assigned seats, unless permission is granted.

6. Speak Spanish only, no English please!!

 

GRADING:

40% Quizzes

30% Tests

30% Oral assessments/Homework

 

TESTS/TESTING:

Major tests (about two each six-weeks) will be given at the end of each unit of study. Vocabulary and grammar quizzes will be given throughout each unit of study. Each exam requires mastery of the previously learned material, and each semester exam will be comprehensive.

 

HOMEWORK:

Homework will be given daily and must be ready when class begins. Late work will be penalized as follows:

1 day late 30 pts. deducted

2-3 days late 50 pts. deducted

After the third day late work will NOT be accepted

 

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

1. loose leaf notebook paper

2. pencil/blue or black pen (work written in other colored ink will NOT be accepted)

3. 1 red pen

4. binder/notebook to keep all work

5. 1 box of tissues

6. 1 package of index cards

7. markers/highlighter

8. 1 stretchy book cover

 

MAKE-UP WORK:

When students are absent, they are to check with the teacher for the work they missed. If a quiz or test is announced on a day the student is present, (s)he is responsible for taking it the day (s)he returns. Also, please refer to the student handbook for further information on make-up work. DISCIPLINE:

I will not tolerate any behavior that disrupts my class. Students are expected to follow all classroom rules. Consequences for breaking rules will be the following: (1) verbal warning and a record of it (2) parent notification (3) referral to the administrator/counselor

(4) permanent class removal

LOST BOOKS

All students are responsible for their assigned books and workbooks. Teacher will do a book check every 6 weeks. If a student loses his/her book, then he/she must pay for it. Always have your book covered.
